Default Speed Record

So what are some top speeds of these GY6 150cc buggies? I've seen "claims" of 80mph on scooters. I know buggies are much heavier so I was just wondering what kind of speeds have been achieved by those here who have been buggin for a while.

set up with tall tires , a 31 T sprocket, heavily modded engine and cvt and a looooooooongg straight run, i'd say mid 40s to maybe 50 is possible. in stock and lightly modded form mid 30s seems to be the norm.

As soon as I get my new chain and contra spring Im going to test mine with Garmin. It sure does "feel" close to 40. Could just be deceived by being close to the ground. Im going to try for 50. Just to see if I can. Ill let you know how that turns out.

the trick with some of the less accurate gps's (i have an old garmin etrex) is to find a place to drive a long distance at top speed to get an accurate reading. mine always shows 29, even though i know it's faster than that. all 3 buggys show that speed on the short runs i have and they all have different top speeds.

With a garmin my red buggy topped out at 31mph and the blue buggy at 29mph. Two trips ago the red gps at 33mph with a strong tail wind. I would say it takes about 50 yards to get to top speed my best guess.
Both buggys have 39/16 sprockets 22/10/10 cst ambush tires and 40/13 internal gears.
I just put the 31t sprocket back on the blue buggy to keep the rpms down due to the 183cc stroker motor and A12 cam. Dont need to rev it that high with the torque from the 62mm/60.8 crank. When the blue dune was new with 31/16 sprockets and 13gram rollers(stock). It would not climb hardly any hills without bogging down, but it would go fast on flat ground probally close to 40mph. With stock suspension this was a harsh ride.
Now both buggies have awesome shocks and the cst ambush tires really smoothed out the ride in the rear.

I've had mine up to 80mph. But I was on the freeway and the Yerf was in the bed of the pickup.

Here's a list of speed gains (post #11) when mods were done just to give you an idea.

@Johnny 5. Your description of your buggy stock is where mine is now. It will flat get it at top speed but has NO pull on hills. That will all change in time.
@ peterbilt. Now that you mention it. Ive had mine up to 80mph too. Wow...... We really rock.

That was a great thread x. It raised two questions for me. What were your impressions on the 58.5mm bore? And drillpvt mentioned modifying his stock pipe. Was just wondering if you had any idea how this is done. Exhaust is a high dollar mod that I will probably never do as I am CHEAP. So id like to get the most from the stock setup.

I drilled out the 5/8 tail pipe and welded a piece of 2 inch long 3/4 inch diameter pipe to a washer and welded the washer to the muffler. My welding isnt pretty but no leaks and some flat black header paint looks good. The sound is a little deeper but not to loud. I just wanted to reduce some back presure but not get too loud. I treid it with a 1 inch hole drilled in the muffler first and it lagged on take off and was so loud it hurt my ears.
It ran worse all the way around. I was very happy with the results and sound of the 3/4 tail pipe that I got from some old bmx handlebars that were rusting in the corner of my garage. I did the same mod on the other buggy also. Before the tail pipe mod was running stock 114 jets in both buggys. After the muffler mod went to a 117.5 and plug came out tan. With the 58.5 srp high compression kit I went to 122 main jet to get a tanish spark plug reading. Also running the orange coil and cdi.

I just drilled some holes around the outlet on my muffler. I thought it was the header being modified but now I understand. Thanks.

The 58.5mm kit didn't make all that much of a difference. But if you're presently low on compression and you're going to be freshening it up, then that's a good time to go big bore.

The UNI filter, coil, and CDI (NCY) do boost perfromance and are fairly cheap mods.

Best gain was from port matching and cleaning up the head, followed by the camshaft.

Just breaking off the "tail piece" on my Yerf muffler was enough to make it a little bit better. BUT, installing the FMF muffler ($30 off Ebay) made a noticeable improvement.

Remember that you have to check/rejet the carb after doing eninge mods.

Thanks for the input x. Yet another higher dollar mod I now feel that I can skip. I dont even have 30 miles on this engine so compression isnt an issue. So i guess that ill decide whether to go 58.5 or bigger when the need arises. So nothing wrond with stock header, just rePlace the muffler. Cool. I'm really glad I found this forum. Its obvious theres LOTS of real world experience here and not just a bunch of kids who think its cool to strap on whatever marketers tell them they need. Thanks to all.

I noticed my Garmin doesn't update very fast. I have seen it as high as 39 but I know I accelerated past that point a bit. I'm thinking around 42-43. My 7 year old daughter is reading the speed for me so it may have read higher. She gets all excited and stops looking at the Garmin.

My old 2006 Carter 150(155/modded)with the SYM was hitting 46 on the GPS on my best day. I was always very happy with that result. I have been chasing that ghost for years now. Damn, why'd I sell her????

Agreed. Low to the ground with trees whizzing by...feels like 90!
The Carter had the 13/43 gears, 16/39t sprocket, 155 BBK, CDI/coil/pipe/UNI/jets, 10g rollers in teflon variator, Koso clutch w/ stock bell, A10 cam, ITP wheels and Carlisle All Trail II 22" all the way around. I don't know exactly what it was, but I DO LOVE the Koso clutches...crazy pull. Big fan of the A10 too...
