Briggs engines use what looks like an idle screw to adjust the air/fuel ratio. Do half turn increments in or out trying each way. When it improves, keep going at half turn intervals until it starts getting worse again. Then back it off until you have reached your optimal performance. Prior to doing that, you may want to count the number of turns in until it bottoms out (so you have a reference point) and pull that entire jet assembly off and make sure that the jet is clean. Then put it back in, and turn it back out as many as you had to turn in (to get to the same starting point) and tune from there. They are actually one of the easier ones to tune because of the way they handle that main jet.

We used to have one of those explorers. Expensive and difficult to find parts but a very sturdy machine when in good shape.
