Question Torque converter

Just purchased a used Manco XTK-706b and it ran good for awhile... Son calls me stuck and the Kart runs but doesn't move when you hit the gas. All belts and chain look fine. Any ideas? It has a torque converter not a clutch... How do you troubleshoot a torque converter?

TY,
Kade

it should have BOTH a torque converter (towards the rear) and a clutch (on the crankshaft of the engine. there has to be a clutch on there somewhere.

Question

Ok...so it sounds like a clutch issue...? I am new to the torque converter idea... I thought I read somewhere if the tires are 12'' or larger is has a TC not a clutch.

Here's diagrams of your CVT system-http://www.*****************/asymapp.htm
You have maintenance that has to be performed on a regular basis to keep the CLUTCH portion working properly. The driven part of the CVT system doesn't require as much maintenance. If it won't move or act like it wants to move something is broken or the engine/belt adjustment has changed. You need to remove the belt/chain guards and inspect the CVT,elevate the rear tires and with it running observe if the clutch is closing in on the belt. Let us know what you find.

Unbolt the clutch from the crankshaft and inspect the interior for broken springs,or pins

Ok... everything looks to be in working order...clutch spins when the TC gets spun... the cutch is working...

When you hit the gas the drive axle spins correctly...but the mini sprocket on the axle doesn't spin with it... any ideas?

if both your clutch and TC spin as the rpm's climb then they seem to be o.k. but if they are spinning and your rear axle sprocket is not.....
how is your sprocket attached to the axle? was it welded or have a set screw to hold it in place? did something break lose back there?

The clutch has a sliding pin on the drive shaft but it doesn't slide under the sprocket... so it must have a set screw..? it isnt welded..I have a picture but dunno how to attach

It might give the slightest push on the sprocket in one position when you spin the axle.

if you are refering to the little sprocket towards the front of that picture then i assume the key is sheared off. it looks like that shaft has a 1/4" keyway cut into it. there should either be a set screw or a 1/4" half-moon key in there to secure that sprocket and keep it from spinning.

Did you remove a bearing and spacer from the back side of the driven unit shaft where that key is?

I started to get into the sprocket area...didn't see a screw or key on the visual side of the picture... then the sprocket locked up like it should... put the belt on and now my son is driving... hmm... thanks from Forestburg, TX... I will keep you informed on how it does today.

Most of the jackshaft/driven sprockets have the key machined into them-Keep him close to the house!!! These CVT systems don't stop working and just start working again without another failure soon after.Good luck!

i'll bet you there is a set screw in there just barely making enough contact with the axle to drive that sprocket.....it's just a matter of time though, be careful driving that thing.

Well it has been going in and out...the immediate remedy is to tighten the bolts at each end of the drive shaft...that seems to work for awhile... I guess I need to undo the both bolts and see what is under the sprocket.. visually I cant see any spot for a set screw..

i would take them bolts off and see what's keeping (or suposed to keep) that sprocket in place before any damage is caused.....might be more expensive to fix if you wait until something gives out.
