Default I pulled the trigger..........bms 800 v-twin

anyway, being a new dealer, who is more an enthusiast you sometimes want to take advantage and A. bring in and try and sell new cool stuff so you can see it yourself and B. bring in and try and sell new cool stuff so you can see it yourself and see if you want one.
B. is the main factor here. as we keep going on travel rides and keep looking for more challenging stuff where as my 400 works great Amber's 250 finds itself struggling from time to time and rightfully so. she does a great job on some of that stuff because she'll make it through stuff that i never thought she would.
so BMS and i have chatted over the last year or so and the 800 v-twin was always very appealing to me, as a replacement machine for Amber and as something i would like to introduce to my customers. well the only way to really check one out is to pull the trigger on it and order one. so that's what i did on new years eve and one week later here she was........about 5 days sooner than the on line tracking told me it would be. so we got it off the truck and i went to town to get it in a state where i could fire it up and pull it in the shop......so here she is, almost together.....
only took 2 quick runs on it down the road and lifted at 63mph and it had plenty left.

Cool

Awesome !!! I'm green (as that buggy) with envy . Do me a favor sometime and discuss the company (BMS) I have a BMS KING COBRA 150 ( revamped Carter Bros. Talon I've been told ) and have been discontinued but other models are still being produced . Reputable company ? Quality ? Parts availability ?
I think your enthusiast side will take over / that one looks like a keeper .

Yeah, I've mulled over getting one of these too. I love my xrx 150, but it would be sooooo nice to have lots of hp already there and waiting.

That looks nice. It would really be nice to already have more power on tap. Even modding the 150 will still leave allot to be desired for me in the HP department.

Nice. That V-Twin should make plenty of torque.

Seems to me they cloned the Can Am motor for those. Is that correct?

yep, it's the same platform odes is using in their 800 utvs. odes have approached me a few times which would be nice but taking on bigger units like that takes up alot of space and not sure if i want to take on that market, this buggy is kind of me sticking my toe in the pool to see what happens. at least i know the wife will be getting use out of it. i am going to do my own research but from talking to bms and odes reps it's the outlander 800 motor

So will these actually compete with stuff like the RZR?

Looking forward to hearing your review on it. Thanks

My observation:

It looks competitive with the 570, but the 900 and 1000 put out more HP. The v-twin may be torquey, but the BMS chassis is heavy. I think open area riding might go to the BMS with its low CG and wide stance, but tight trails will be better with a RZR.

apples for apples the rzr800s put out 55hp, i've driven one so it seems on par with that model speed wise, weight they are about the same at around 1100lbs. the ace 900 and rzr's using that same motor put out 60hp along w/ this thing. not enough seat time in a rzr to remember the turning radius.....the only thing that concerns me is where will my 400 fall in comparison, i have beaten an 800 rzr in a drag race and it does run right there w/ them but i'm wondering it isnt time for a stroker in my buggy?

well apparently the chinese think we in the U.S. have monkey arms. i am 5'8 and where the pedals fell comfortable w/ the seat all of the way back the reach for the steering wheel is a doozy. the seat adjustment only moves an inch and where the pedals are the seat in comfy all of the way back. so my wife being 5'6 has a heck of a time reaching the wheel. so i needed to come up w/ a plan to remedy this that would be bolt on. my first instict was to maybe order another steering shaft and modify it and make it longer but beings i have a gift for over complicating some thing i figured i'd try the simple (kind of) route first. using a steering spacer and quick release, and baking a bolt on bracket to change the angle of the shaft so here is what i have so far. what is cool is i got to break in my wifes Christmas present in to make something for her buggy..... a plasma cutter!

Cool stuff JD. Would love me a plasma cutter.

I'd be cutting all sorts of stuff that shouldn't be cut. Just because ....

Your steering looks identical to my 650 Joyner. Does that have an EFI/ ECU system and if so do they offer support such as a program card for diagnostics?

yeah tom it's EFI. i havent looked into that yet cuz like you probably know the feeling i'm too busy chasing my tail to get caught up. between repairs, phones, a customer's build, receiving shipments, DYI remodeling at the shop and prepping our stuff for a march/april ride @durhamtown......thats been on my things ive been meaning to do list, call and find the tech guy that knows something (there's always 1) at their facility and start getting friendly and grilling him for info.

had a storm and lost internet at the shop while i was loading so i didnt get to make a post before i left.
did some minor changes, fabbed a roof, changed out the lights for led headlights and a light bar on the roof. put a marine cover over the radio and added a digital voltage meter to the dash. loaded it up and off to durhamtown.
i completetly rubber mounted the roof used automotive sway bar link bushings for the mounts and picked up some furniture feet at home D and drilled and ran bolts thru them, stuck them in the roof light holes to keep the front overhand from vibrating.
i bent the roof (1/8 alum) w/ my p.o.s. TSC brake, it marred it up a bit (to thick for the cheap brake) so i DA sanded it and painted it. i want to make a better one so we will call this the prototype.

the headlight plugs looked like the old joyner plugs from the 250 and i had some in a crate. once i dug them out i cut off the plugs and used them on the LED cubes so they were plug and play. the light bat got a couple of bullet connectors and plugged into one of the 4 leads for the 4 roof lights.

once we hit durhamtown it was game on!
the first day she had a passenger so she took it pretty easy.at the end of the day went she went back to the cabin i went back out w/ the 400 to find that G-ray was stuck in the messiest peanut butter pit i had ever seen. the georgia clay had swallowed up his RZR. after trying to pull it out w/ his wife's rzr, he asked to get the 800 for the winch.
at first when i got back the winch would not work. i had tested it before but nothing would happen. someone went back to get the only other guy w/ a winch but i had kept playing w/ the on/off switch and all of the sudden it came to life. so the bms got a winch test. i am a little weary about it and want to check it out but so far it is working still. mission accomplished.
immediately after i asked team hog to try a drag w/ me. we hit the strip and raced but i started spinning the rear tires and it started heading towards the fence ( rained most of the day), when i lifted the throttle stuck so i turned the key off. somehow i got it unstuck. i thought it was a chunk of clay from my boots but it happened again going back to the cabin. i figured out it was the throttle cable clevis hanging up on the frame. probably the cable stretched a bit, but i was weary loosened cable or not it might happen again. the best solution was G-ray's idea to file down the one side but i will be making a guide as an extra safety feature to prevent this from happening again. the next day was no holds barred. she had no kid in the passenger seat so she started actually riding it. it held up great except the weight of the clay that stuck to the fenders wreaked havoc on them. i took the rears off and they literally weighted at least 25lbs each the right front got so heavy the tab ripped off the frame. i have never seen anything cling like this clay.
the stock shocks and seats will be getting changed. they both suck. the shocks are too stiff even w/ very light preload in them and the seats have a bar that will kill your tailbone. power is great and the 4wd worked flawlessly. she even got out of a hole a friends RZR got stuck in so she went down to harass him. she got stuck twiceand got herself out twice, very happy ! the shock/seat thing is expected. even rzr peeps change that stuff.
all in all very happy, and i'm glad it's been ridden so i can start fiddling w/ it.
here's some vid.

It should be about 2 pounds lighter after the transmission grind this past weekend.

trying to get caught up at the shop since the trip. amber had a flat on the way back to camp the last time out at DP. we re inflated the tire and could here it but couldnt find a problem w/ the tire. Gray found the leak on the inside of the rim. i washed it off and loaded it up. i finally got the wheel off and to find the crack and have it welded. apparently she caught a rock that put a groove in the inside of the rim and finally put a crack in it. i dropped the wheel off at my buddies so he could tig it. so far i have washed this thing 3 times and the clay keeps falling off of it. here is after the 3rd bath.

wheel is back and looks good. i wish i could weld as good as my buddy, but thats why he does it for a living. i slapped some paint on it and all thats left is to mount the tire when it dries.

well next ride in about 3 weeks so i am humping on our stuff. i ordered RZR1000 seats and am waiting for all of the pidley stuff to try and make this work like they were meant to be in there. the other things will be a shock change, which i think for this trip i might try the set of FOX 2.0's i have on the CROSSHAMMER as an experiment. they are there and they are free so it would only make sense to give them a run. the other thing i needed to do was change out the tail lights. why? because about 3 weeks ago i walked in the shopand one of the lenses was on the ground shattered. after checking out the scene i noticed the other one was cracking so i ordered some LED tail lights that had abuilt in reverse light. they were a little bit bigger than an average LED oval light so they actually cover the stock square hole....no fab. the bms doesnt have a reverse light so that is on the chalk board for the future

ordered some stuff for the 800....1st all of the missing seat parts, got them in and still missing a few things, theyre on the way.
2nd a set of seizmik utv mirrors w/ green seal inserts, gone are those chinzy stock scooter mirrors. 3rd the headlights i originally ordered for it came in after we got back from durhamtown so they are going on and the original cubes are getting mounted where the mirrors were. i had to make mounts for them to clear the cage. 4th i completed the mount brackets for the rzr seat bases. when the seats get installed they should function and come out just like in an rzr.as i right this the paint is drying. 2 1/2 weeks to go til kentucky!

the work continues.....
needed to replace the floor board under the seats, it's made out of plastic and had cracked from the weight of the georgia clay. i used it as a template and grabbed a sheet of aluminum and traced it. w/ the plasma cutter cut it out and then used a hole saw to cut the seat bolt access holes. drilled out the mounting holes and bolted it in . after that was installed i bolted in the seat brackets i had made and test fit the assembled seat to make sure everything worked. sunday morning was to see what i had to do to change shocks i pulled out all of the decent shocks that might fit the bill as replacements but i didnt have a set of fronts the length i needed. then i thought that maybe i would do something w/ the Fox Airs on the crosshammer. i went in my storage bay and pushed it over to the shop. the poor neglected beast had 2 flats a dead battery and now i was about to rob it of it's most expensive components. i put it up on jack stands and took off the rears. the rear shocks are 16 1/2" and the fronts on the hammer are 18 1/2" so i was gonna use the rears on the front of the BMS and vice versa. i took off the BMS fronts and they were 17". i didnt want to loose a 1/2" plus droop so i had to sit and think about how i wanted to do this. i started thinking if the bottom mount was more inboard and away from the balljoint like the stock mount was it would be more responsive.when the 800 got delivered the preload was at it's stiffest setting when i took it out the spring softened up but the shock doesnt really want to lift it back up....typical stock!
so i started brainstorming some sort of way to be able to bolt on these fox's with altering anything permanent. so i came up w/ bolt on shock mounts to bolt on these shocks. they move the bottom shock mount inward about an 1 1/2". knock them out and had them fitted and painted before noon. then i had to get home , take my dog to the vet and work on my trailer for next weeks trip. a quick fitting and the front end actually moves when you push down on it. i'll need to take a pressure reading on it because i suspect they probably need for nitrogen. tomoorow will be the rears.

having pretty good luck w/ milwalkee these days but the deal is wd-40. as i drill i'm spraying it down which is why all of that stuff is pyled on the vice like that. it cools the bit which will make it last longer plus it cut much more efficiently and removes more material.

tic toc.....
rear mounts got done last night and everything got mounted today. aired them up and looks like they will make quite a difference. if i stand on it it actually moves. that in itself is a big improvement.
changed the oil and installed a pro armor harness. tomorrow the other harness should arrive with a new 3000lb Warn winch and another set of seizmik pursuit mirrors for Lucifer. then both bugs should be about ready. ...........hopefully!

been busy since i got back from kentucky and suffering from a pinched nerve in my back. apparently my lowest vertebrae got tweak and sat on a nerve so ive been dealing w/ that.....lots of chiro visits.
figured i'd share some pics and vids, the 800 did flawless and the changes were great as far as the seats and suspension. i actually got to drive it the last afternoon/night we were there cuz Amber decided to sit the last trek out. so i figured i'd leave Lucifer behind and give it a test of my own.
i do have more vids but i have to get them on youtube.

ps feel free to send a friend request on this facebook page if you so wish or if you cannot see the vids.......basically it's 99% buggy ! 100% off road stuff!

Jd pics look great. Wanted to ask I see a couple of Polaris aces in your pics, have you driven any of them a 570 or the 900? I'm really tempted into looking at one next year. Just wanted someone's opinion if they drove one since the dealers don't let you test ride them.

they are the 325, or something like that. i drove one in april at Durhamtown and although was super impressed it wouldnt be for me. they will climb almost anything in 4wd, just isnt my cup of tea. i would be more opt for an RZR than the ace. i never really felt tippy but i really didnt throw it around hard cuz it wasnt mine.
